Getting around in Singapore

via efficient Bus, Taxi and MRT services

Singapore has one of the most efficient public transportation systems in the world. Modes of transportation include taxis, buses and a modern mass rapid transit (MRT) system.

Buses

There are 2 major bus operators in Singapore - The Singapore Bus Service (SBS) and the Trans–Island Bus Service (TIBS). Both offer public transport that are affordable and efficient; with special night services that provide transporation up to 4.30 am. Bus stops are located at convenient places on most of the tourist locations. More than 80% of the buses are air-conditioned.

Tip: Buses will not normally stop at bus-stops unless they have to drop or pick passengers. You will need to flag down the bus by raising your hand. Also, when you want to get down, you will need to press the bell before your desired destination.

Most bus drivers are friendly and will help you if you are not sure where to get down. Just indicate your destination to the driver.

MRT

Mass Rapid Transit, or MRT as they are popularly called, is a fast, convenient, comfordable and affordable way to move between destinations. With 51 stations covering all four corners of Singapore and trains arriving every few minutes, you can be assured of a speedy and enjoyable journey.

Tip: All MRT cars have a network map printed on them. It will help you locate your destination station. There will be announcement before every station. In case, you miss your station, don't panic. Get down at the next station and take the MRT in the opposite direction. You will not have to pay anything extra.

We suggest that you buy Bus and MRT guide at the translink office located at the airport. You will find it extremely useful to plan your travel within Singapore. It will cost around S$2.

Taxis

Taxis are available all across the island. For the convenience of tourists, taxi stands are located outside most hotels, shopping centres and tourist locations. You can also flag down a taxi on the road if you can't locate a stand.

Tip: You do not need to negotiate fares with taxi drivers. As soon as you board a taxi, the driver will switch on the taxi meter. At the end of you journey, you will have to pay the fare indiated by the meter.
